Undergraduate Artwork
Metal fabrication has grown to be a dominant component of my creative vocabulary. Whether working at the forge, pouring molten bronze, or welding, the properties of metalwork are an intrinsic vehicle of expression in my artwork. Left alone, metal is cold, stiff, and sharp. Left untreated, metal is prone to tarnish and rust, but through the application of heat, it becomes malleable and capable of taking new forms. The juxtaposition of the process mirrors reoccurring themes in my sculptures. Working intuitively, the objects I create document introspective explorations through the human psyche and my search for the courage to share those vulnerabilities. Giving life to personal anxieties is a visceral process. Finding the energy and will to create despite self-doubt can be debilitating. My artwork chronicles the ongoing struggle to reach within oneself to piece together broken fragments of an identity while giving life to new hope.
